Somalia: Press Conference-Minister for Humanitarian Affairs & Resettlement

Mogadishu Saturday 19 Sep 2009 SMC

The Somali Transitional Federal Government has on Monday the 14th of September 2009 displayed to the media 4 young boys whom their hands and legs were mutilated by the Al-Shabab saying that they were robbing people.

Each of the 4 boys had his right hand and left leg chopped off, and told the press that they had not committed any fault, but they were deliberately victimized.

“The rights of these young boys were deliberately violated, and they were not given spare time to defend themselves, or to have lawyers and this is absolutely against the wide Islamic Sharia law and the international law as well” said Sheikh Abdurrahman Janaqow the Somali Justice Minister.

The names of the boys who were handicapped are as follows:

1-Jeylani Mohamed Abdukadir.

2- Ismael Khalif Abdulle.

3-Ali Mohamoud Ali.

4-Abdikadir Abdi Duluhow

“I am a man with 6 kids and their mother, I was the bread winner of my family the Al-Shababs have accused me of working in a certain hotel where Somali government officials were staying” that is how I have missed my precious body parts” said Jaylani Mohamed.

“I was a student in one of the schools in Mogadishu, and I was accused of being a member of the Somali government soldier, and that is how I missed my valuable right hand and left leg” said Ishmael Kahlif who was the youngest boy among the 4 boys.

The young Ishmael has also added that when their hands and legs were hacked off of they were taken to a certain filthy house in the neighbourhood, and were not provided with all the essential human needs

“We have been saved and brought here into safe and merciful hands of the Somali government by one of the Al-Shabab boys who were keeping guard on us” added the young Ishmael.

“The Somali government will from today henceforth will take care of these 4 boys, and I urged both the international community and the Somalis in the world wide to response to this disastrous situation, on the other hand some couple of days ago there were ex-Somali military soldiers who were killed in a mortar shells fired by the insurgents, these ex-Somali military personnel have not participated in any of the civil war in the country, but have been the heroes of Somalia who fought against Ethiopia in 1977I therefore urge the Somalis both locally and internationally to offer Charity to the remaining ex-Somali Military personnel” said Dr. Mohamoud Abdi Ibrahim (Garweyne) the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Resettlement in the Somali government addressing the press.

In his statement the Minister has as well talked about the prolonged drought in the country which has affected both human and livestock, and urged the humanitarian organizations to quickly respond.

From there the Minister for Humanitarian Affairs and resettlement for the Somali federal government Dr. Mohamoud Abdi Ibrahim, has also paid a visit to the African Union Hospital in Mogadishu were hundreds of Somalis suffering from different kinds of ailments were admitted.

The Minister guided by AMISOM General Medical Dr. Colonel James, and the spokesman for AMISOM Major Barigye Bahouku has visited in a tent where there were 6 ladies who were waiting to go under Fistula surgery.

The Minister held another press conference inside the tent where the 6 ladies were waiting to be operated.

“I will pray for you all so that these surgeries you are undergoing to end up in a success, and my thanks goes to the AMISOM forces particularly Dr, James and his colleagues who will be carrying out the operation and as well COGWO women organization who brought these 6 girls to AMISOM base” said the Somali Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Resettlement.

The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Resettlement, has similarly when round to another giant tents where there hundreds of Somali patients where admitted, and prayed for them to recover soon.

“My work in the humanitarian field started in the early 1990s. Those young children that my colleagues and I helped after the collapse of Somali government in 1991 are now adults. It is morally satisfying to see them fully-grown. As Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Resettlement, I do not see my position as a political one but rather having a personal attachment to this field.

The message that I want to share with you is frank and personal, and today what I have seen here really moves me, because what I have seen with my own eyes is horrible I will do all means possible I can to help these patients” added the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs concluding his speech.
