Arab League and World Food Programme officials discuss emergency support for Somalia

Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Amr Moussa, met with the John Powell, Deputy Executive Director of the World Food Programme (WFP) on Saturday in Cairo.
Mr. Powell addressed a forum of influential decision-makers and gave a presentation on the current status of the World Food Programme’s operations in Somalia and Darfur.
Outlining numerous food security and feeding centre implementation challenges including piracy, drought, corruption and defence of WFP personnel -- Mr. Powell appealed to Arab League member states -- urging them to act quickly and comprehensively with the provision of full humanitarian aid to the Somali nation and Darfur region of western Sudan.
According to a statement that was issued following the meeting, Mr. Moussa praised the Arab League for its continued commitment to funding the World Food Programme. Furthermore, Mr. Powell added that his organization and the Somali/Darfuri people as a whole are very thankful for the support provided by Arab League thus far, but great need still exists and considerably more monetary support/material relief is needed.
