Somalia: fierce fighting in Mogadishu leaves 3 dead
Mogadishu Wednesday, October 08 2008 SMC
Heavy fighting has in the early hours of Wednesday morning started at Sarkusta location some 8KM from the Somali capital Mogadishu.
The fighting commenced after forces loyal to Al-Shabab a religious faction, which sturdily rejects the presence of the foreign troops on the ground and the policy of the Somali transitional federal government raided at a Somali military checkpoint in Sarkusta location.
The Somali military seemed to be defeated in the confrontation and was militarily supported by the Ethiopian troops who have a base in the area, so the battle was triangle battle.
The warring sides exchanged different kinds weapons including rocket propel grenades, mortars, cannons and other related weaponries.
A stray rocket propel grenade has killed three people in some parts of Wadjir district in the Somali capital Mogadishu.
The echo of the weapons the warring parties were exchanging could almost be heard in the entire city, and it has really panicked the residents in Mogadishu and those ones scattered on the road between Mogadishu and Afgoi district.
“In fact it was great victory we have lashed out the so called government soldier at Sarkusta, and we have killed 10 of their soldiers and two of our martyrs we wounded we have briefly taken control of their base and we have taken arms and ammunitions and good amount of money which they were illegally taking from both the drivers and the pedestrians as well” said an officer in Al-Shabab group.
An officer in Somali government verified for Somaliweyn radio that the attack carried by the A-Shabab gropu is right, but their claim about the killed soldiers and the confiscation of weapons is null and void.
Even after the battle subsided the road which links Mogadishu and Afgoi district became inactive, though it later opened.
Some reports from KM13 locations says that the beaten Somali government soldiers stretched themselves at KM13 locations and robbed the shops in the area and have taken with them all the items in the shops.
