Somalia: ARS chief slams pirates

Muqdisho Sunday, 23 November 2008 SMC

Somali Re-liberation alliance, the Djibouti side Sheikh Sheriff Sheik Ahmed has strongly condemned the pirates hijacking merchant vessels on Somali waters.

Sheikh Sheriff, the moderate leader who is currently in Djibouti said “Hijacking merchant vessels or other ships crossing in the Gulf of Aden, is absolutely what we oppose”.

“Our religion does not allow these acts, the pirates must stop playing the dignity of Somalia” added the cleric, who is also the boss of Islamic courts Union ICU, which briefly ruled south and central Somalia in 2006.

Sheriff also mentioned the fail regarding that Ethiopian troops didn’t draw parts of the capital as the October agreement saying.

He said “these had happened for the sake of technical issues, and wish that the Ethiopians to leave parts of Mogadishu and then all in the country in the coming days”.

Transitional Federal Government (TFG) and ARS have singed in Djibouti last month an agreement that was including a truce and Ethiopians to start it’s leaving parts of the capital 21st November, but instead of leaving Mogadishu on that date, Mogadishu hosted heavy fighting with in the last two days, that claimed the deaths of 20 more civilians and wounded dozens.

Other Islamic factions operating in Somalia rejected the peace agreement and vowed to fight against the foreign troops assisting the TFG.

Somali has been luck of central government since 1991, after warlords toppled the former military regime of Mohamed Siyad Barre.
