Somalia: Italian nuns are due to be released

Mogadishu Tuesday, 18 November 2008 SMC  

The two nuns abducted from El Wak Kenya a week ago were reportedly in good condition and still they are alive, residents said.

Suspected of Somali Islamists kidnapped two nuns from Kenya to Somalia almost one week ago, and Kenyan had deployed more troops to the border as they said, they were chasing the kidnappers to survive the Italian nuns.

Kenyan security forces confirmed that they were pursuing the kidnappers but said no progress had been made.

Local elders in Elwak told Somaliweyn through the wire, that they held a meeting and discussed the security of the city and how to release hostages of Elwak Somalia whereby the hostages have been held.

An elder who wants not to be named told Somaliweyn the Italian nuns are safe and in good condition, and efforts towards to release them is going on.

He refused to say more than these words.

Other sources in Elwak say, the Islamists those rule in the town vowed to fight if Kenyan troops enter into Somali territory,  evacuation have already started in the city.

The nuns now confirmed as their names Caterina Giruado, 67, and Maria Teresa Oliviero, 61, both natives of Italy.

Armed Somali gangs have carried out scores of kidnappings in recent months, targeting either foreigners or Somalis working with international organizations to demand ransom.

Aid groups said at least 24 aid workers, 20 of them Somalis had been killed so far in Somalia, with more than 100 attacks against Aid agencies.

Italian foreign minister has declared that they will do any thing possible towards how to release these two abducted nuns.
