Somalia: AMISOM settles an Ethiopian base, as part of Djibouti agreement

Mogadishu Monday, 17 November 2008 SMC

Peace keepers from African union in Somalia made a new base in Mogadishu as part what they have called as to implement the Djibouti agreement between transitional federal government and alliance re-liberation of Somalia (ARS), that was mentioning to withdraw Ethiopian troops from  Mogadishu first and finally all the country.

A spokesman for the African Union Mission in Somalia major general Niya Yungorola  Jovanal said, some of their troops have based in the former Jalle Siyad faculty, whereby Ethiopians have been staying since late 2006.

Habitants near former Jalle Siyad faculty affirmed to Somaliweyn Radio, that Ethiopian troops still remain in the compound and can’t be clarified how far they will leave from there.

The spokesman for the African union Peacekeepers in Mogadishu, said, “we are not only the one who is required to implement the Djibouti agreement, but all Somalis”.

Jovanal says, “They will deploy more other bases in the capital in the next future.

The figure of the troops had not been identified, but was said they are from Burundi, that deployed to Somalia almost one thousand troops.

Late October, delegation from the Transitional Federal Government (TFG) and representatives from the ARS opposition faction led by the moderate Islamist leader Sheik Sharif Shiek Ahmed signed a ceasefire agreement and a power sharing deal after a number of other previous deals failed to stop the violence in the war-ravaged country.

The agreement also stipulates the withdrawal of Ethiopian troops from specific areas in the capital Mogadishu and the central Somali town of Baldwyn before their full withdrawal from Somalia.
