Somalia: the rate of child stealing high in Puntland

Mogadishu Thursday 13 May 2010 SMC

Somaliweyn – Mohammed Omar Hussein

The towns of Bossaso and Garowe in the semiautonomous state of Puntland in eastern Somalia have in the past couple of months became a place where children are stolen by strangers and Najmo a young girl of 12 years of age living in the coastal town of Bossaso in Puntland was a month ago stolen from Boassao by strangers.

These strangers who have managed to steal some of the children in Puntland have not had the success to take these children to their willing destinations.

In Bossaso alone the whereabouts of almost 4 children who are strongly believed to have been stolen by strangers are not known, and the families in Puntland are very anxious about the recent waves of child stealing in the region.

And as per the case of Najma the 12 years old girl who was stolen from Bossaso a month ago, was stolen by a Tanzanian man who was receiving guard lines and support from a Somalia woman.

The two child smugglers have used unrevealed substance which made Najma to be unconscious, and boarded the young Najma into a lorry which was heading towards the southern regions in Somalia.

After along travel Najma became conscious and she looked around and she saw herself laying on the lap of a strange woman and started crying.

Najma at once dashed towards another woman who was among the passengers and informed her that she has no knowledge of the woman and the man who are with her, and does not know where they are taking her to.

When the lorry reached at Hudur town the headquarters of Bakool region in northwest of Somalia the passengers informed the issue Al-Shabab a rival Islamist faction in Somalia who controls most of the regions in south and central Somalia.

The Tanzanian man has escaped while the woman is in the hands of Al-Shabab and Najma has safely reunited with her family in Boassao. Najma’s Mum Zeynab has also done all sort of efforts and struggles to bring back her daughter in the family.

“I am now the happiest mother on earth after I saw my young daughter back in our premises, and from know on I will put extra monitoring in her movement I shall take her to school and bring her back from school” said mother Zeynab.

A part from stealing of children Puntland is the largest hub for Somali pirates and recently the Somali pirates have redoubled their efforts of hijacking veseels off the coast of Somalia, and within weeks the pirates have hijacked 5 ships.
