Somalia: 12 died in ferocious fighting in Mogadishu

Mogadishu Sunday, 10 May 2009 SMC

Vicious fighting between rival Islamists groups has on Sunday erupted in the Somalia capital Mogadishu and has claimed the lives of 12 people and 20 more wounded.

This battle is linked with battle which has been sparking in the city for the past couple of days. An officer in Madina hospital where most of the casualties in the city are taken told Somaliweyn radio that in the past 4 days of the clashes between the Islamists groups more 60 people with different bullet wounds admitted in the hospital.

The two battling sides the Al-Shabab and the Islamic Courts Union were previously in one group known Islamic Courts Union and have been fighting against the Ethiopian troops and the AU peacekeeping forces those are troops from Uganda and Burundi, but after the withdrawal of the Ethiopian troops from the country and the chairman of the Islamic Courts Union sheikh Shariff Sheikh Ahmed was in landslide vote elected as the head of the nation the military wing of the Islamic Courts Union defied to recognize Sheikh Shariff as the President of the country and are now strongly opposed to his presidency.

Reliable source says that Al-Shabab movement has gained control some key destinations in the capital Mogadishu, on Sunday’s battle with the Islamic Courts Union forces which supports the government of Sheikh Shariff Sheikh Ahmed.    

Somalia which is a country on the breadline has been in anarchy since late Mohamed Siayd Bare was toppled from power in the year 1991.
