Message from Mr José Manuel Durão Barroso, President of the European Commission, to His Excellency Mr Ban Ki-moon, Secretary-General of 
the United Nations 

“Dear Mr Secretary-General,

I was profoundly shocked to hear of the devastating attack on the joint United Nations – African Union force in Darfur which killed and wounded peacekeepers. I was also deeply concerned to learn about the killing earlier in the week of the head of the UN development programme in Mogadishu.

The European Commission condemns unreservedly these acts of unacceptable violence. 

On behalf of the European Commission, I wish to express my most sincere condolences and offer my deepest sympathy to you and to the victims and their families. To those wounded I convey our sincere wishes for a full and speedy recovery.

The European Commission emphasises its solidarity with the United Nations  and all those who work under its banner for peace and development, and its support for UNAMID in its important mission to contribute to improving the security of the people in need in Darfur.
