Somalia: “Noor Hasssan is no longer the Somalia premier,” says president Yussuf

Mogadishu Sunday, 14 December 2008 SMC

Somali President Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed on Sunday declared that he had sacked Prime Minister Nur Hassan Hussein and his government during a press conference in the southern town of Baidoa, which is the temporary base of the Somali transitional federal government.

"As from today Sunday the 14th of the last month of the year 2008, I have sacked the prime minister and his current government and I will nominate a new prime minister within a period of three days,

" said President Yusuf in his press conference told reporters.

In the press conference the president said that he fully supports the recent peace deal between the Somali transitional federal government and its opponents, which was signed in the Djibouti capital Djibouti, but added that there are still some points, which need to be rectified.

"The government of Nur Hassan Hussein was incapable to perform its duties and I am indebted to save the country," he added.

The former Mayor of Banadir Mohamed Omar Habeeb Mohamed Dheere flanked the Somali president, and there are suspicions that the president is likely to nominated Mohamed Dheere as his Premier.

Nur Hassan Hussein was sworn in November 2007 but has been at loggerheads with Yusuf in recent months, notably over ongoing efforts to strike a reconciliation agreement with the Islamist-led opposition and the removal of the Banadir regional commissioner Mohamed Omar Habeeb.

Hussein replaced Ali Mohamed Gedi who was forced to resign after months of a yellowing power struggle with Yusuf, a veteran warlord who has headed Somalia's transitional administration since its setting up in 2004 in the Kenyan capital Nairobi.
