Somali Army Club wins General Da’ud Cup.

Somali Army Sports Club, Horseed SC, has won the 2019 edition of General Da’ud Cup after beating Mogadishu City Club 3-2 in a hotly-fought over match on Thursday.

The Somali military side took the lead in the 12th minute of the match when Mahad Mohamed Abdulkader [no 9] netted the opening goal of the very competitive final game, before Hassan Abdinor Geeseey scored a brace in the 42nd and 67th minutes.

The first half of the match ended in 2-0 in favour of the Army club, but the capital Mogadishu’s team fought back in the second half, with two goals from Faisal Ahmed Hassan [no 7] and Faisal Hassan Hashi [no 10] in the 50th and 85th minutes of the match.

Winning General Da’ud Cup trophy has a great significance for the Somali Army, as the annual competition is held in the remembrance of the founder of Somali National Army, General Da’ud Abdulle Hersi, but unluckily they [the military team] have been missing it for the past four years. Horseed had won its last General Da’ud Cup trophy on 18 December 2015 when they defeated Heegan SC 2-1 in the final match.

“We have made a tremendous amount of work which has paid off and we have finally won the trophy of a competition which has a very great importance for us, because we [The Somali National Army], and the whole nation are remembering the father of Somali Army” Horseed Sports Club chairman, Dr. Mohamed Ahmed Mohamed, said as he celebrated for Thursday’s victory.

Amongst the top level officials who watched Thursday’s General Da’ud Cup final match are: Deputy Army chief of staff, General Mohamed Ali Bariise, director general of the ministry for youth and sport, Isaq Hashi Jimaale, Mogadishu Mayor, Omar Mahmoud Mohamed and Somali Football Federation senior vice president, Ali Abdi Mohamed.

Horseed SC coach Abdi Mahmoud Mohamed, has been awarded as the best coach, while Hassan Abdinor Geeseey [Horseed SC] won the best player award and Said Aweys Ali of Mogadishu City Club has been awarded as the best goalkeeper.
