UN University for Peace Launches MA and PhD Programs

The United Nations University for Peace (UPEACE) in Collaboration with Somali Disaster Resilience Institute LAUNCHEs NEW ACADDEMIC PROGRAMMES IN SOMALIA

The United Nations University for Peace (UPEACE) was created on December 5th, 1980 by the General Assembly of the United Nations through Resolution 35/55 with headquarters in Costa Rica, Central America. It has Regional Centers in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, China, Philippines, Columbia and joint programmes in Austria, South Korea, Monaco and Honduras.

Through the Africa Regional Centre based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, UPEACE implements Master’s and doctoral Programmes and strengthens the capacity of African Universities, Research Institutes, Think tanks, Regional Economic Communities as well as the African Union and United Nations agencies through teaching, training, research and publication and community outreach. UPEACE has functional capacity building agreements with 27 institutions in Africa.

In Collaboration with Somali Disaster Resilience Institute (SDRI) based in Mogadishu, UPEACE launched a series of academic programmes to support Somalia’s post conflict peacebuilding and development agenda. Following an MoU signed between the two institutions on August 14the, 2018, the Somali Disaster Resilience institute will be hosting the following UPEACE Master’s and PhD Programmes:

  • MA in Peace Governance and Development

  • MA in International Law and the Settlement of Disputes
  • MA Disaster Resilience Leadership and Humanitarian Assistance
  • MA Media, Peace and Conflict Studies
  • MA Gender and Peace Building



  • PhD in Peace Governance and Development
  • PhD in Disaster Resilience Leadership

Admission Start Date: September 15 – 2018 End Date: October 25, 2018

Program Duration: 12 Months

Course Structure: 12 courses over 12 months in two semesters and an independent research project

Study Days: Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays

MA Programs Tuition: $ 3000

PhD Program Tuition Fees: $20,000
